In January 2026 the United States Federal Government introduced a 1000 US Dollars contribution for children born between January 1st 2025 and December 31st 2028. The federal contribution of $1000 is put in an account/deposit. This deposit is expected to grow due to stock market investments. Families and employers can deposit contributions into the account, with considerable tax advantages. Access to the account is possible when the newborn baby has reached an age of 18 years, until this moment funds remain under guardian control.
According to the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024 there are 68 countries, containing 28% of the world population number in 2024, currently experiencing a decline in national population numbers. This population decline is the result of a previous long-term decline in fertility rate (the average number of children a woman will have), followed by a more recent decline in the annual national number of births, known as birth rate. In these 68 countries the population decline can be very recent or already being in progress for several or even more years. Among these 68 countries the majority is situated in Europe, but “the big ones” are outside Europe like Japan, The Russian Federation and The Peoples Republic of China.
Globally, 28% of governments have policies to raise national fertility rates. Europe, with 66% has the highest proportion of countries seeking to increase their national fertility, followed by Asia with 38%.
Humankind has programmed itself. The economic structure, the political and financial system; even the human mindset is programmed for one thing only: growth. More, not less. Governments do the same thing, aiming to keep national population numbers at a stable continuous growth. To secure a stable financial structure. To ensure stable tax revenues for planning future investments in public infrastructure, industry, agriculture, housing, health care etcetera. A governmental structure based on growth will fall apart when faced with decline. All governments do the same thing when confronted with a national population decline: they totally freak out.
The United States isn’t the first and only, and certainly not the last government that has implemented a baby bonus. Actually, the first was the Australian government in 1912, introducing a baby bonus of 5 Australian Pounds. Today we have numerous countries having numerous baby bonuses. Only a short selection of recent ones follows here. In 2025 The Russian Federation offers a 690.000 Russian Ruble (8295 US$) for a first child and a additional 221.895 Russian Ruble (2667 US$) for the second child.
Singapore has a long history of declining national fertility rate and today has one of the lowest on the planet. Since 2001 Singapore has the Baby Bonus Scheme, it has been continuously enhanced since. In 2022 the “cash gift” maximum amount for the first and second child was set at 8.000 Singapore Dollar (6320 US$) and 10.000 (7900 US$) for the third and subsequent children. In The Peoples Republic of China local governments offer one-time cash subsidies up to 100.000 Yuan (14.000 US$) for a first child and incentives for second and third children. In December 2025 the medical baby bonus was introduced. The Central Government announced that all medical bills for “having a baby” will be paid by “the state”.
In the next 30 years another 48 countries will join “the club of population decline”. According to the United Nations Population Prospects 2024 another 48 countries will have their “population peak” between 2024 and 2054. This group of countries are also experiencing a long-term decline in national fertility rate, followed by a more recent decline in birth rate. But the national population decline has not yet arrived. They already pressed the alarm button, they know what is coming very soon. The majority of this group is situated in Europe and South America, including Brazil with a national population number over 200 million. But the really big one in the group is India, which has the largest national population number on the planet, currently at 1.471 billion people (estimated by worldometer.com).
Global fertility rate incentives have a lot of different “angles” to increase national fertility rates. The baby bonus is just one way to do it. Current scientific research suggests that all incentives only have a short-term effect. In 2054 there will be 116 countries, containing roughly 40% of the world population, experiencing a severe and long-term decline in national population numbers. If you take a look at humanity’s history, you will understand that all governments reaction to a national population decline in the past and present is the same: they “will go all the way” to minimize and reverse this decline. They did in the past and will do so in the future.
All global scientific demographic research in the world confirms that the world population will stop growing, followed by a decline. The only arguments are about “when” and about “the record number” the world population will have at “it’s peak”. According to the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024 the growth of the world population will have “it’s peak” in the middle of the 2080’s at a number around 10.3 billion people on the planet. In none of this scientific demographic research the effects of current and future global fertility incentives are included in short or long-term estimations. Global fertility incentives aren’t even mentioned. But they will make a difference in the future.
If you use your common sense, you will see the logic. Global fertility incentives will postpone the “peak” moment of world population growth. Because of that the world population “record number” will be higher than in current estimations. Global fertility rate incentives will make a difference in the future. I was born in 1957, so this is not about my future, I will not be around in 2100. This is about your future. The future of the current generation who want and will have children. This is about the future for your children and grandchildren. It’s for you to decide how that future will be like, your government will do the same thing over and over. All scientific research agrees on one thing; the quality of life that your children and grandchildren are going to have depends on the choices you, we, make today.
